Double Bay bridge club offers boot camp for the brain

More than a thousand people a week cut the cards each week at Australia's largest bridge club, the Grand Slam Bridge Centre in Double Bay. What they may not realise, however, is that their night out is also keeping their brains fit and stave off dementia.
Research recently released by Sydney's Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute shows that age-related memory loss can be avoided, by maintaining the brain's connective white matter.
"There are many studies showing that taking part in new activities will benefit your brain," said research fellow, Dr Olivier Piguet. "It's extremely important to remain active, be out there, play bridge, chess and be physically active as well."
Grand Slam general manager Paul Marston said the centre's clientele ranged from teenagers to centenarians, with their oldest player aged 103.
"It is a fabulously social activity and it brings people together on an equal footing," he says. "We could solve the problems of the world with our clientele, who range from the who's who in the eastern suburbs to young people with spirited ideas.
